Laser eye surgery is painless - thanks to droplet anesthesia

Why does laser eye surgery not hurt?

Many of our patients find this hard to believe at first

Many people are afraid of laser eye surgery because they think it might be painful. But this fear is unfounded, as modern procedures are so gentle and safe that you hardly feel a thing. Here we explain why laser eye surgery doesn’t hurt and what the benefits are.

The eye is a very sensitive organ that is equipped with many nerves. For this reason, it is anaesthetized with special eye drops before laser surgery, which take effect within a very short time. This makes the eye completely insensitive to the procedure and the laser beam that sculpts the cornea. Even after the operation, there may be a slight burning sensation (mainly due to disinfection) or a feeling of pressure. However, this can easily be alleviated with painkillers and artificial tears.

The completely minimally invasive SMILE Pro procedure in particular is very gentle on the eye, as it protects the cornea and its nerves as much as possible. In this procedure, a wafer-thin layer is created in the cornea with the laser, which is then removed through an access point just 2 mm wide. The cornea remains completely intact and heals in a very short time.

Only the no-touch trans-PRK procedure can cause pain during healing, as the top layer of the cornea is removed. However, this alternative procedure is only suitable for very thin or irregular corneas and is rarely used. Healing takes longer and requires intensive aftercare.

There is also no need to worry about moving the eye unintentionally during the laser procedure and thereby jeopardizing the success of the treatment, as the eye is gently fixed in place during the laser procedure so that it cannot move. In addition, modern lasers are equipped with eye tracker technology, which detects every movement of the eye and adjusts the laser beam accordingly.

We are also always pleased when our patients report (in their testimonials and on Trustpilot or Google) that fears of pain were unnecessary and that they did not find the operation and the time afterwards unpleasant at all.
