Multifocal Lenses and the Treatment of Presbyopia

The implantation of a Multifocal Intraocular Lens is a superior method for correcting Presbyopia and allows for a life "free from glasses."

Presbyopia typically develops between 40 and 50 years of age. Small print becomes increasingly difficult to read and one becomes dependent on reading glasses. Even for those who have nearsightedness or farsightedness earlier in life, eventually, everyone will develop presbyopia.

There is a solution for presbyopia: the implementation of a Multifocal lens (also known as Trifocal lens). The implantation of the multifocal lens is a safe, precise, and well-tested procedure for the correction of presbyopia. The treatment consists of exchanging the natural lens of the eye with an artificial lens. This Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a proven procedure as it has been used for cataract treatments for decades

The multifocal lens is a sophisticated artificial lens with several focal points, it enables clear vision for various distances – without the need for glasses. This lens is well tolerated and can remain in the eye permanently.

EuroEyes has a deep experience with the multifocal lens and has performed the most intraocular lens implantations in Germany. The Multifocal lens also combnies with LenSx technology, which makes this duo the most advanced technology in ophthalmology.

The Procedure

The stages in refractive lens exchange:

Preparing the Eye

This outpatient procedure typically lasts 15 minutes per eye. Anesthetic eye drops will make this a pain free procedure. The eye is opened with a key-hole incision in the corneal periphery that heals without the need for a suture.

Removal of the Lens

The fibrous lens capsule behind the pupil is opened in a circular manner and the lens nucleus is removed. The lens capsule is then utilized to support the artificial lens after implantation.

The Multifocal Lens

Every patient receives a custom-made artificial lens, manufactured especially for each individual eye. This artificial lens is well-tolerated, has lifelong durability and is not visible.

Implantion of the trifocal/multifocal Lens

The surgeon inserts the new lens with an injector into the eye. The lens unfolds and is then properly located in the lens pocket. The trifocal / multifocal lens can correct the following vision disorders: presbyopia and simultaneously problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

Unique Features of the Multifocal Lens:

  • “State of the art” technology to optimize your vision
  • Stabilization of refractive power
  • Freedom from glasses and contact lenses for a lifetime
  • Restoration of the natural visual range
  • Prevention of cataracts

Clinical studies show that 97% of all patients who had trifocal/multifocal lenses implanted in both eyes, no longer need glasses. A normal daily routine such as reading, shopping, computer work, driving, and even shaving or applying make-up are possible glasses.

Trifocal/multifocal lenses used by EuroEyes meet only the Highest Quality Standards:

  • Excellent optical quality
  • Reduced light scatter phenomena
  • Reduced glare problems
  • Better contrast vision under poor lighting conditions

Treatment Procedure

1.  Consultation and Evaluation

  • All relevant eye parameters are measured
  • We will determine your suitability for trifocal/multifocal transplantaion
  • Consultation to optimize your treatment

2. Pre-treatment Examination

  • A comprehensive ophtalmological examination and the measurement of your eyes will be carried out
  • Our specialists in ophthalmology will explain every step of the treatment in detail
  • The examination lasts approx. 2 hours
  • In order to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the medical examination you should not have worn soft contact lenses for one week and hard contact lenses for two weeks
  • Following the examination you will receive an after-care set. The medication and content will be explained in detail by our staff

3. On the Day of your trifocal/multifocal Treatment

  • If possible, please take someone with you
  • We recommend that you wear comfortable clothes on the day of treatment
  • You can eat and drink normally on the day of treatment, but please do not smoke
  • For hygiene reasons, it is also important that you wash your face thoroughly prior to treatment, completely remove all makeup and avoid perfume
  • Outpatient surgery, anesthetic eye drops, no bandage required, sunglasses are recommended
  • The total duration of surgery will be approximately 10-15 minutes per eye
  • If we treat both eyes, we usually treat them on two consecutive days

4. After your trifocal/multifocal Treatment

  • Please do not rub your eyes
  • How and when to use your eye drops will be discussed with your doctor
  • Apply Artificial tears as needed
  • You are able to return to work after 2-4 days
  • You can resume sports activities after 3 days, but should avoid swimming and sauna for a longer period
  • Post-operative follow-up examinations: after 1 day – 1 week – 1 month  and 3 months
  • You may drive a vehicle again only with the doctor's permission

Lens Properties

The Properties of our Latest Generation Lenses are Excellent and of the Highest Standards

  • We only use the latest generation of trifocal/multifocal lenses.
  • These are equipped with patented high performance optics and will give you back visual acuity across the whole range without the need for glasses or contact lenses.
  • The premium trifocal/multifocal lenses are manufactured with computer-controlled diamond tools.
  • This means the highest possible precision and optical quality.
  • The lenses are manufactured using patented SMP technology:
  • Glare phenomena, that usually occur with multifocal lenses, will be reduced to an absolute minimum. The aspherical optics are engineered applying a special process that results in less glare, fewer halos and improved contrast sensitivity. This will give you overall, enhanced quality of vision
  • The Lenses will also protect the sensitive retina from UV radiation and can be delivered with extended light protection in addition to a UV filter.
  • In ophthalmology, this protection is applied particularly for the prevention of macular degeneration (AMD).

Whether you suffer from presbyopia or cataract, nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, clinical studies show that 97% of patients fitted with multifocal lenses no longer need glasses.

Laser Precision

EuroEyes uses the femtosecond laser LenSx® for this surgical procedure to achieve even greater accuracy and precision. The laser will carry out several essential steps of the lens operation, that were previously done manually by the surgeon.

The laser eye surgery performed during lens exchange allows for painless and precise cutting through different layers of eye tissue and offers two advantages over the manual technique: the lens exchange is performed and is even more well defined, as the trifocal / multifocal lens can be positioned more accurately and offers improved safety because the laser cuts more precisely than the surgeon.

Euro Eyes is the competence center for lens surgery and one of the first clinic groups in Germany, to use the LenSx®method in laser lens exchange.
